INFORMATION ABOUT LICENCES
Private Mobile Radio - when you DO NOT need a licence Low power two-way radios operate on 8 UHF
frequencies that have been issued for general, short range use by Ofcom (Office
of Communications). These frequencies have been allocated to a pan European service called PMR446. In the UK,
there is no restriction on where you can use these frequencies and they are programmed into the radios at time of
manufacture. These radios normally use sub-audible tones to create a maximum of 38 possible usable channels per
frequency in order to minimize interference from other users. Ideal for schools, events, small shops/business, outdoor
hobbies (skiing, sailing, walking), garden centres, the list is endless. Unlike phones there are no charges for using
these radios other than replacing batteries occasionally.
Professional Radios Higher power two-way radios work on VHF and UHF radio frequencies. These
frequencies are assigned to a user by Ofcom who also regulate the frequency bands. To obtain a licence on one of these
frequencies you need to apply to Ofcom. The benefits of a licensed frequency tend to be greater range, less
interference from other users and more features are available on the radios. These frequencies are allocated
to businesses only, on a case-by-case basis. Once the licence has been issued to you, you can then purchase your
radios. We, as your supplier, will need to see a copy of your licence to program the radios to the correct frequency
before shipping.
